Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas swept the team titles at the Volusia-Flagler Freshman-Sophomore Track and Field Championships on March 23 at Matanzas, leaving the Volusia schools to fight for second place.
FPC dominated the boys' side, compiling 130 points with Mainland finishing second with 94.5 points. Matanzas placed fourth.
Matanzas edged Seabreeze for the girls' title, 107-103. FPC was ninth.
The field events were a big reason for the Bulldogs' championship. Chase Magee won pole vault, clearing an even 10 feet, while Tanner Bennett-Cauley was second (7 feet, 11.5 inches). Daniel DeFalco won javelin (156 feet, 3 inches). And Colby Cronk won shot put (41 feet, 1.5 inches).
D.J. Murray won the 200 meters with a fast time of 22.46 seconds. Matanzas' ShoMario Gaines was second in both the 100 (11.48 seconds) and the 200 (22.91). FPC's Justin Gilliam was second in the 1,600 meters (4:54.59). Matanzas Jeffrey Powell placed second in triple jump (34 feet, 11 inches).
The four hurdles events were all won by Matanzas athletes named Jordan. Jordan Mills won the boys' 110 (16.75 seconds) and 300 hurdles (42.25). Jordan Youngman won the girls' 100 hurdles (18.4 seconds) and 300 hurdles (52.24 seconds). Youngman also finished second in the girls' high jump (4 feet, 7.75 inches).
Evanne Miller won the girls' 400-meter run (1:00.61) and finished fourth in the 100 meters (13.73). FPC's Maya Tyson won the girls' shot put (30-9.25). The Bulldogs' Kelilah Epstein finished second in girls' javelin (80 feet, 3 inches). Matanzas' Karajah McCoy was second in girls' triple jump (30 feet, half and inch).
Matanzas won the girls' 4x800 (10:51.76) and 4x400 (4:21.83) relays. FPC won the boys 4x100 relay (44.23 seconds) and the 4x400 relay (3:40.25) with Matanzas finishing second (3:47.63).
Other top three individual finishes for Flagler County included: FPC's Cody Newton (third in boys' long jump); Matanzas' Nina Rodriguez (third in girls' 800); and FPC's Taylor Spann (third in girls' 200). Newton was also fourth in triple jump, while Rodriguez was also fifth in the 1,600.
