Jonathan Campbell's senior baseball season came to an end May 2 when Mainland fell to Matanzas 13-3 in a district quarterfinal. Campbell pitched 4.2 innings. The Pirates wound up scoring 10 runs off three Buccaneer pitchers in the fifth.
Campbell, a defensive back who signed with North Carolina A&T, can't concentrate on preparations for his first college football season just yet, however. The pitcher/outfielder/defensive back/quarterback is also on Mainland's track and field team, and he earned a spot in regionals as an alternate for the 4x400 relay team.
Campbell was supposed to throw the javelin at districts, but his arm was too tired from pitching, said Terry Anthony, Mainland's track coach and athletic director. But Campbell was needed to fill in for an injured Devin Franklin on the 4x400 relay. Campbell helped the relay team win the district title.
This is his first year on the track team.
"I'm mad at him for not coming out for track his first three years," Anthony joked. "It was our best time all year (3;26.59), and the second time he ran it."

Corey went on to defeat Miami Palmetto's Sebastian Munoz for the Class 4A overall championship. Munoz had won the individual singles title among players who advanced to state with their teams.
