Mainland High School’s Class of 2022 filled the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach with a sea of blue graduation gowns on Tuesday, May 24.
Principal Dr. Joseph Castelli addressed the graduates and reflected on their time at Mainland with “Buc Pride.” According to Castelli, 59% of the seniors graduated with a grade point average above 3.0 while 38% maintained a GPA higher than 3.5. They have accumulated over 15,000 community service hours and have attained over $3 million dollars in scholarship funds. Eleven students have already earned associate degrees from Daytona State College.
Cheerleading coach Jenece Giddens is losing seven seniors and has mixed emotions about their departure.
“I'm going to miss them but I wish them the best,” she said. “I sent them a heartfelt message today for them to stay focused and to enjoy the journey and not to give up. This is the beginning of the rest of their lives.”
Valedictorian Caden James Allen implored his fellow graduates to appreciate, thank and most importantly, love their parents for they were there to support their endeavors and life transitions. Allen wrapped up his commencement speech with a quote from Ed Koch, the former mayor of New York City.
“The fireworks begin today. Each diploma is a lighted match. Each one of you is a fuse.”
