Two Jacksonville motorcyclists die in crash near Mile Marker 296 on Interstate 95

A separate crash killed another motorcyclist in St. Johns County.

Two motorcycle riders were killed in a crash on Tuesday, May 24, in northern Flagler County.

Four motorcycles were traveling northbound on Interstate 95 approaching Mile Marker 296 in the left travel lane, at 9:39 p.m. May 24, when the crash occurred, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A sport utility vehicle, driven by a 48-year-old Jacksonville woman, was traveling northbound on Interstate 95 approaching mile marker 296 in the center lane.

For an unknown reason, the four motorcycles collided into one another, and all four riders were ejected into the roadway. Subsequently, the SUV struck one of motorcycle riders. 

Two of the motorcycle riders were pronounced deceased on scene, one 22 years old, one 29, both from Jacksonville.

The drivers of the other two motorcycles, ages 25 and 36, both also from Jacksonville, were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The northbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed for approximately six hours, but have been reopened.

 

A second fatal crash

At 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, another fatal crash occurred, this one in St. Johns County.

According to the FHP, a motorcycle driven by a 21-year-old St. Augustine resident was traveling westbound on State Road 16 in the inside lane, when he failed to negotiate the curve, near Jardine Avenue. He crossed into the eastbound lanes, struck a traffic sign, and was ejected onto the shoulder. The rider was pronounced deceased on scene.
