The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners approved $100,000 from the county's reserves for two surveys to meet FEMA guidelines for grants.

County Engineer Faith Alkhatib said that the money will be for a new LiDAR survey to accurately grasp sand loss after Hurricane Ian, and an engineering analysis survey. The funding request was approved 5-0.

“It’s really very needed to move forward,” Alkhatib said.

The current numbers of loss are based on a survey from January 2021, Alkhatib said, and they need updated information in order to qualify for FEMA aid for emergency work and for permanent work. The $100,000 will likely be at least partially reimbursed down the line, she said.

The survey will need to be expedited, Alkhatib said, and could be four weeks before the survey comes back, and then six weeks for the engineering analysis.

"We need to move forward and get it done,” she said.
