After three days of emergency repairs, all sections of State Road A1A impacted by Hurricane Nicole reopened on Saturday, Nov. 12.
The local sections of road — one of which was located in Ormond-by-the-Sea — had sustained significant road erosion due to the storm. The impacted sections were:
FDOT spokesperson Cindi Lane said in an email last week that FDOT was filling the damaged areas of the roadway using thousands of yards of granular fill. A Nov. 12 press release by FDOT reported crews utilized nearly 11,000 cubic yards of sand, over 600 truckloads, for the repairs.
“FDOT has completed emergency repairs on the last three storm-damaged sections of S.R. A1A, and reopened the roadway after only three days of work,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said in the press release. “FDOT crews have been working to complete repairs in a couple of days that would normally take much longer.”
The press release states that the storm conditions “significantly damaged the scenic highway by washing out nearby dunes, eating into the shoulder, and undermining the roadway in scattered portions of the road throughout these three counties.”
Repairs were also made to A1A in St. Johns County.
“FDOT’s goal was to get the roadway accessible again as quickly as possible, which was made possible under the leadership and support of Gov. DeSantis,” FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue said. “FDOT continues to work diligently to serve Florida’s residents and ensure that the state’s impacted infrastructure is open and available to the traveling public.”
Additionally, FDOT cleaned sand debris from 14 miles of A1A in Volusia and Flagler counties, according to the press release.
Since the Planning Board meeting originally scheduled for Nov. 10 was postponed due to the storm, the board will now meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5.
The board will discuss five items related to the proposed 137-room hotel and 15-home project at 251 S. Atlantic Ave. and 264 S. Atlantic Ave.
The developer, Ormond Beach Holdings LLC, seeks an issuance of a development order, two zoning map amendments, a comprehensive land use amendment and approval of a preliminary plat.
The five-story hotel is planned to span 95,700 square feet on 2.19 acres of oceanfront land. The 15 residential homes across the street will occupy, if approved, 3.49 acres of the former Florida Hospital Oceanside site. The hospital was demolished in 2019.
The proposed 15-home community along Valencia Drive will be known as “Tide’s Edge at Ormond Beach.”
The developer plans to construct 108 parking spaces next to the hotel east of A1A, and an additional 62 spaces across the street. The hotel is planned to be a Marriott Residence Inn.
Ormond Beach city staff will provide an update on impacts from Hurricane Nicole at the next commission meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
The commission meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15, was an organizational meeting to swear in the new commission.
“I just want to make it clear that we’re not blind to the fact that we’ve all just gone through a difficult time, and really came through it quite well as a city thanks to our staff and prior commissions,” Mayor Bill Partington said.
Those seeking to take part in the city’s 31st-annual Home for the Holidays parade on Dec. 10, should submit their entry forms by Monday, Nov. 21.
This year’s parade theme is “Christmas on the Coast.” There will be a tree lighting at 6 p.m. at City Hall, followed by the parade start at 6:30 p.m.
The number of parade entries is limited.
