Flagler Palm Coast High School senior Ryder McDowell took part in Carnegie Mellon University's Summer Academy for Math and Science in Pittsburgh over the summer, according to a press release from Carnegie Mellon.
SAMS, a competitive national program, is free to participants, and a total of 1,300 students have taken part in the last 15 years.
SAMS prepares students to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines at the nation’s top colleges. Students complete research projects with Carnegie Mellon faculty members and participate in skills-building workshops on the college application process, according to the press release.
About 75% of SAMS participants go on to pursue a degree at a selective university, and nearly 40% pursue undergraduate degrees in STEM fields, according to the press release.
