The Seabreeze Sandcrabs volleyball team killed it in three straight sets against their local rival, the Mainland Buccaneers, on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Seabreeze won, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-13.
“We look forward to playing our opponent (Mainland) all year,” Seabreeze coach Sara Kameh said. “It’s a big deal for our school, so I definitely think our confidence was up being at home. After the unfortunate (3-1) loss against Father Lopez (on Sept. 6), I think they all took it to heart and brought it today.”
Two of the Sandcrabs' go-to players are sisters—senior Skylar Martin and junior Mollie Martin. They are the best attackers on the team and tie for the lead in kills almost every game. Skylar prevailed in this game with 11 kills, while Mollie had 10.
“Attacks are split between the sisters,” Kameh said. “It’s a competition between them but it’s usually only by one or two that one pulls ahead. We really look to them to lead and to score for us.”
Seabreeze’s sole setter, Andie Litz, led the team with 30 assists and 10 digs. The sophomore, who is the youngest player on the team, commanded the court with a variety of plays that got the offense moving quickly.
“We started off this game with a completely different mindset. We were going to be accountable for ourselves and accountable for our teammates. I think it really made a difference in the game and I think you could see that.”
BELLA DILLMAM, Seabreeze volleyball team co-captain and libero
“She just has improved so much this year,” Kameh said. “She really runs that offense and does not stop. She’s telling everybody what to do.”
Mainland came into the game after a big win against Flagler Palm Coast the previous week. The Buccaneers prevailed by winning three out of four sets with top playmakers Mia Mayberry racking up 12 kills and 10 digs along with Ava Colubiale’s 13 kills and 9 digs and Jaelynn Brown’s 14 kills.
Sadie Rich led the Bucs in kills against Seabreeze with 10 and added 11 assists. Rich had 51 assists against FPC.
Seabreeze team co-captain Bella Dillman has played volleyball since the third grade and is currently the Sandcrabs’ libero. She and her teammates believe they should have won the match against Father Lopez, which made it “a very rough game.” They changed their mentality before playing Mainland.
“We started off this game with a completely different mindset,” she said. “We were going to be accountable for ourselves and accountable for our teammates. I think it really made a difference in the game, and I think you could see that.”
Seabreeze played its third match in three days against DeLand on Sept. 8 and lost to the offensive powerhouse, 3-0. Kameh remains faithful to her team’s mantra of having fun.
“A big thing for our program is we just want to have the most fun of any team in Volusia County,” she said. “That was a big reason we won a lot last year, so I’m just trying to carry that forward this season. Once they start, it keeps the momentum going.”
Dillman is having fun this season. She had 10 digs against the Buccaneers.
“My favorite is definitely getting on the floor and picking up ‘tips’,” she said.
