Cleanup crews: Volusia participates in annual International Coastal Cleanup event

At Tomoka State Park, volunteers collected 611 pounds of trash.

Over 600 pounds of trash were picked up by volunteers at and around Tomoka State Park during Ocean Conservancy's 37th-annual International Coastal Cleanup event on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Volusia County hosted cleanup events in 23 beach and river sites. The county's preliminary data shows 1,305 people participated and 7,887.2 pounds of trash were collected. A total of 118.6 miles were cleaned.

At the Tomoka State Park site, Dream Green Volusia Founder Suzanne Scheiber led a small group of volunteers to a wooded area near the Toscana neighborhood off the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail. Within a few minutes, volunteers had unearthed glass bottles, children's plastic toys, aluminum cans and other pieces of litter. Some of the 611 pounds of trash collected by volunteers around the state park included a recliner, car parts and construction debris, according to Scheiber.
