Daytona State College is receiving more than $5 million in state funding to support its workforce development programs.
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the award during a Sept. 16 press conference in Daytona Beach. The $5 million awarded to Daytona State is part of a $30 million workforce development initiative along the Space Coast, according to a news release from the governor's office.
"Currently there are over 91,000 manufacturing and aerospace technology-related jobs on the space coast, and this $30 million investment will build more opportunities for Floridians," DeSantis said, according to the news release.
Of the over $5 million slated for DSC, $3.9 million will be used to expand the college's welding, machining, cybersecurity and apprenticeship programs, while another $1.3 million will be used to create a new commercial drivers license training program, according to a news release from the college.
DSC hopes to start the CDL program in February 2023. The state funding is expected to cover 77% of the program's $6,995-per-student tuition for the first year, or as long as funds are available.
