The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Division Chief in charge of the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility is selected as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) tasked with updating the basic training required for all correctional officer recruits in the State of Florida.
Based on his specific knowledge and experience, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has asked FCSO Court & Detention Services Chief Dan Engert to participate in the Corrections Basic Recruit Training Rewrite workshop scheduled for September 26-28, 2022 in Tallahassee. FDLE will reimburse FCSO for travel expenses for his participation.
“This invitation from FDLE recognizes the cutting-edge services and training we provide at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “It’s a tremendous honor for the Sheriff’s Office to see that Chief Engert’s vast knowledge and experience in the field is going to be utilized in training throughout the state. He has incorporated numerous best practice policies and innovative initiatives at our jail since he was hired after a national search. Chief Engert will definitely be an asset to FDLE in helping to shape how the state sets the highest training standards for detention deputies and correctional officers in Florida.”
Chief Engert has served as the Division Chief at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility since his appointment by Sheriff Staly in January 2020. Previously, he served 30 years with the Niagara County (NY) Sheriff’s Office as Deputy Chief Jail Administrator, winning the 2019 Gold Key Award from the Western New York Chemical Dependency Consortium for his efforts to address addiction and mental health issues in the jail and community.
“It’s an honor to receive this invitation from FDLE’s Bureau of Training,” said Chief Engert. “I hope my participation will ultimately help corrections deputies in Florida to be trained under the highest standards possible.”
Chief Engert currently serves as a Commissioner on the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission (FCAC) and is a certified Jail Manager as well as a past board member of the American Jail Association (AJA). He’s also a Certified Correctional Health Professional and a member of the Academy of Correctional Health Providers.
Recently, Chief Engert’s Court & Detention Services Division was awarded the 2022 NIJO Innovation Award for implementing programs designed to help inmates acquire the skill sets and health treatments they need to lead a productive life once they’re released from jail.
