Cars lined up for a mile along U.S. 1 in Palm Coast on Monday as locals headed to the city's sandbag distribution site to prepare for Hurricane Ian.
The cars slowly snaked through the city's Public Works site on Wellfield Grade as residents took their 10-bag allotment. (For information on how to get sandbags, click HERE.)
"When they say a storm's coming, we prepare," said local resident Cyndee Finney as she and Jospeh Finney loaded up with the assistance of city employees.
Palm Coast had started distributing sandbags on Sunday, while Flagler County and Flagler Beach also opened sandbag sites over the weekend or on Monday.
Palm Coast soon opened additional sites to keep up with demand. Flagler County Sheriff's Office and County Jail inmates helped fill and disperse bags for residents at some sites.
In Flagler Beach, while residents prepared, some locals' conversations about Ian turned to the waves.
Java Joint Beachside Grill employees Hannah Oswald and Jewel Van Horn served coffee and speculated about the storm.
"When it's over, hopefully there will be some great surf," Oswald said.
