Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt announced all schools in the district will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 28, due to Hurricane Ian. They will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 30.

“This is not a decision we take lightly, but we want to give our families enough time to prepare their homes for this storm or evacuate the area if they feel that is the best option for them. We also need to use this time to prepare the emergency shelter space our campuses offer, should people be asked to evacuate.”

“This is not a decision we take lightly, but we want to give our families enough time to prepare their homes for this storm or evacuate the area if they feel that is the best option for them,” Mittelstadt said. “We also need to use this time to prepare the emergency shelter space our campuses offer, should people be asked to evacuate.”

All after-school activities planned for Wednesday, Sept. 28 through Friday, Sept. 30 have been canceled. This includes extracurricular activities, including sporting events. The SAT testing scheduled for Matanzas High School on Oct. 1 has been moved to Oct. 15.

Two schools will serve as shelters of last resort for Flagler County residents. They are expected to open Sept. 28. Rymfire Elementary is being prepared as a special needs shelter, and Bunnell Elementary will be a general population/pet shelter.

We encourage all Flagler County residents to prepare for this storm. Please heed all warnings from our local emergency management officials, as situations can change hour-by-hour. For the latest updates and information, we suggest you visit Flagler County’s website, www.flaglercounty.gov.
