A New Smyrna Beach-area man died Thursday, Sept. 29, due to flood waters from Tropical Storm Ian. This is the second confirmed death in Volusia County Sheriff's Office's jurisdiction.
Rescuers were on their way in a high-water vehicle to rescue the man, 67, and his wife from their home on Lake Drive in New Smyrna Beach at around 10:30 p.m., according to a Facebook post by Volusia's Sheriff's Office. The neighborhood had waist-high water and was inaccessible by standard patrol vehicles.
Before rescue arrived, the man fell inside the home and could not get out of the rising water. Rescuers attempted life-saving measures when they arrived, but unfortunately the man was pronounced dead on the scene, the Facebook post said. His wife and dogs were taken to a storm shelter.
The first confirmed death in Volusia happened in the early hours of Thursday when a 72-year-old Deltona man fell in a canal during the storm.
