A 27-year-old South Daytona man was sentenced to 15 years in state prison on Wednesday, April 5, for a 2019 street racing crash that resulted in a 73-year-old woman's death in Ormond Beach.

According to a news release from the state attorney's office, Erik Worthington was found guilty of vehicular homicide by a jury in December 2022, over three years after the June 4, 2019 crash where the state attorney's office reports he was racing at speeds of up to 114 mph on Nova Road.

Worthington's vehicle crashed into victim Mary Spanos' car as she was making a left turn on North Nova Road from Shadow Lakes Boulevard. Initially, her injuries were thought to be non-life threatening, but she died at the hospital seven hours later.

“The victim’s family and friends must live with the tragic aftermath of the defendant’s reckless behavior and nothing can change that,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said in the news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they move forward with their lives.”
