The driver of a car that crashed into a tractor trailer on Interstate 95 in Flagler County April 13 has been charged with a felony.

The crash happened when the driver’s Kia Sorrento rear-ended a semi-truck parked on the right shoulder near mile marker 287 southbound.

The driver of the semi truck was uninjured, but both of the sedan’s occupants — the driver, 28, and his female passenger, 24 — were taken to Halifax Hospital with serious injuries.

While investigating the crash, the FHP trooper discovered that while both passengers lived in North Carolina, the driver did not have a United States-issued valid driver’s license, according to the man’s arrest report. Instead, he had a valid Nicaraguan passport and driver’s license.

He has been charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license and causing serious injury.

He was taken into the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s custody on April 19.
