The Flagler County School Board approved the 2024-2025 school calendar at its business meeting on Dec. 19.
The calendar includes a full week of Thanksgiving break and no classes on election days and ends the first semester before winter break. To preserve those priorities, the calendar committee — with consent from the board — added seven minutes to the high school day.
With Aug. 12 the earliest day the school year can begin, the first semester will have 85 days while the second semester will have 94 days. To meet the state-required number of instructional minutes for high schools in the first semester, the district is lengthening each of the seven class periods by one minute.
The school day at Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools currently ends at 2:40 p.m. Next year, the high schools will be dismissed at 2:47 p.m. Elementary and middle schools will not be affected by the change.
Superintendent LaShakia Moore noted that the weeklong Thanksgiving break is a priority for families. But Monday (Nov. 25) and Tuesday (Nov. 26) of that week are potential hurricane makeup days. They are listed third and fourth on the makeup day priority list.
After receiving community feedback and checking the spring break dates from adjoining school districts, Flagler Schools changed a teacher workday from March 24 to March 14 but made no other changes.
