Halifax Humane Society's Cat and Adoption Centers inside the Volusia Mall will close, effective Jan. 1, 2024, the animal shelter announced Friday.

"This decision comes after careful consideration and an in-depth analysis of our organization's staffing and budgetary constraints," a press release stated. "Initiated out of necessity during a respiratory disease outbreak of Pneumovirus, these centers were more than just spaces; they were vibrant hubs, showcasing shelter animals in a unique and abstract light while providing a crucial outlet for adoption during a challenging time when our main shelter adoption center was closed."

The 5,000-square-foot adoption center opened on July 15 after HHS needed to temporarily suspend intake following the diagnosis of 15 dogs with upper respiratory infections.

"Over the past six month, we have been overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the opportunity to bring attention to these incredible animals in need of loving homes," HHS said in its press release. "From the moment we opened the doors, we were met with an outpouring of support from the community."

HHS invites the public to visit its main adoption center at 2364 LPGA Blvd. in Daytona Beach, open daily from 12-6 p.m.

"Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey," HHS said. "Your support has made a lasting impact on the lives of countless animals, and we look forward to the continued collaboration as we explore new avenues to better serve our community."
