The Flagler County Sheriff's Office apprehended two suspects who fled from a stolen, pink semi-trailer on Monday.
FCSO deputies were called out to the Days Inn in the 100 block of North Garden Street in Palm Coast at 2:12 p.m. on Jan. 30 because an employee saw two people spray painting a new-looking, pink semi-trailer red, according to the arrest reports.
When the two suspects — a male and a female — saw the deputies approaching, they ran into the trees lining Interstate 95 and on to the 289 mile marker, southbound off ramp. Deputies caught the female quickly, but the male hid in the trees, evading law enforcement and attempting to hitchhike to escape, the report said.
Deputies initially set up a perimeter around the wooded area the man was hiding in and began searching for him, but dismantled it when he could not be found.
Just before 5 p.m., deputies responded to a call of a man matching the suspect's description who was waving down cars on the southbound side of I-95. Deputies were able to apprehend and positively identify the man as the suspect, the report said.
Deputies found the semi had a Mississippi tag and was stolen out of Columbia County in Florida earlier that morning. Both suspects were from Tampa, the report said; the female said the truck was meant to be used to transport cargo, though she said she didn't know what kind.
While searching the man, deputies found a VIN number sticker for a separate vehicle that was stolen out of Manatee County and a dollar bill with a white substance that field-tested positive for fentanyl.
The two were taken to the county jail and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief over $1,000, resisting an arrest and, in the male's case, possession of fentanyl and possessing a vehicle with altered numbers.
