Vernon Sylvester is a veteran of the Korean War. He enlisted in the Navy as an aerographer’s mate. Sylvester was trained in weather forecasting and oceanography and used this developed expertise aboard the USS Coral Sea as it navigated the high seas. Upon discharge after honorably serving his country, he was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal. Sylvester used the G.I. Bill to go to college and received his degree in physical education and general sciences. He taught school in South Carolina for a few years, then returned to home to New York City and worked as a social counselor. Sylvester ultimately transitioned to contract management, which he did for the state of New York until retirement. He relocated to Palm Coast in the early 1990s.
