The Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution welcomed Jocelyn and Carl Hargrove from the Southeastern Florida Guide Dogs at its February meeting.

The Hargroves have been raising dogs since 1989, according to the chapter. Esther, who attended the recent meeting, is the couple's 50th dog. The Hargroves train puppies for 8-10 weeks for socialization and obedience training. The puppies are tested on their skills before transitioning to working guide dog training, which lasts 12-16 months.

"Once fully trained, the dogs are paired with a recipient who spends 20 days on site, bonding with their new guide dog," the chapter stated in an email. "All of this is done at no cost to people receiving the dogs."

Most of the recipients are blind, have PTSD, or are children with significant challenges.
