The Florida House could be ready to take up a proposal that would allow trained certified nursing assistants to give medications to nursing-home residents.

The House Health & Human Services Committee on Friday unanimously approved the bill (HB 351), sponsored by Rep. Will Robinson, R-Bradenton. The vote positioned the bill to go to the full House.

The bill would allow certified nursing assistants to become trained as “qualified medication aides.” They could then administer what supporters have described as “routine” medications to nursing-home residents, freeing up registered nurses to provide other needed care.

The bill is backed by groups such as AARP and the Florida Health Care Association, the state’s largest nursing-home industry group. The Senate Health and Human Services Appropriations Committee this week approved a similar bill (SB 558), sponsored by Sen. Colleen Burton, R-Lakeland.
