The Flagler Palm Coast High School varsity Starlets dance and colorguard team won a state championship on Friday, March 24, at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach.
The Starlets won the Florida Federation of Colorguards Circuit AA Class Harlow Division championship.
"It was quite an emotional evening," Starlets head coach Lauren Albert said, adding that tears flowed when the Starlets were announced as the champions.
"Countless hours of practice had paid off," Albert said. "This is the first time in school history to have a gold medal earned at the FFCC championships, and I couldn't have asked for a better group. Our show, 'Recovery,' could connect with everyone in the audience, the up and down feelings you can have in any given moment and the idea to keep going — things will always get better.
"Starlet alumni, band directors, Starlet coaches and Starlet team members rushed the floor to hug and cry happy tears that we had finally accomplished this huge goal," Albert added.
Albert said another colorguard director said that was the most genuine response to winning he had ever seen, Albert said.
"Their love for each other and their team was in full picture that evening," she said.
The Starlets varsity team includes: Tianna Leadon, Abigail Perez Ramirez, Vanessa Arredondo-Alamilla, Madison Berrios, Devynne Martz, Madilyn Winternheimer, Melody Proctor, Kaylee Bliss, Amirah Pinto, Daisy Arredondo-Alamilla, Olivia DeCruz, Madyson Mirza, Aleigha Bennett Cauley and Kaileah Egasan.
The show was choreographed by Starlet alumni, which made it even more special, Albert said.
The choreographers included Amari Hollins, Sydni Leon (current member of the USF World Colorguard Team), Vasthi Malvoisin (former UCF Pegasus colorguard member) and Keith Neal (current UCF Pegasus Open Team member).
The Starlets also made school history this season by competing in the Winter Guard International regional event.
"This will help us begin our path to compete in Ohio for the WGI championships in the coming years," Albert said.
