Thirty Flagler County veterans were honored for their service on Nov. 10 by the local NAACP Chapter 5147’s Veterans Affairs Committee. The veterans were each given an afghan blanket at the committee’s meet and greet event at the African American Cultural Society.

“I believe that the veterans really enjoyed the event because it was personal. We brought them up one by one,” Committee Chair Adolphus “AJ” Evans Jr. said.

Over 90 people attended the meet and greet to honor the veterans, he said.

“We did not specify rank or military branch, but the individual veteran, all equal," he said. "And they loved it.”

Bill May, commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 86; and Palm Coast City Council member Cathy Heighter were the guest speakers at the event. Evans said Heighter also provided the afghans that were given to the veterans.

Evans said honoring veterans is one way the local NAACP chapter sets out to be a good community partner.

“To implement, execute positive activities within the community [is our goal],” he said. “We're not only a community organization, we are part of the community.”
