Volusia County is seeking $4.5 million in state funding to relocate the proposed Ormond Beach fuel farm by Belvedere Terminals.
At the County Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 7, Volusia Deputy County Manager Suzanne Konchan said the county, its lobbyists and Rep. Tom Leek's office have been working on an appropriations document to acquire the funding.
"It is necessary to help prepare an alternative site, with say utilities or road infrastructure, to relocate the facility to a more appropriate place than its current site," Konchan said.
The Observer reached out to a spokesperson representing Belvedere Terminals, asking if the company was aware Volusia was seeking funding to prepare an alternative site for its proposed fuel farm at 874 Hull Road in unincorporated Volusia County near Ormond Beach.
"We continue to work with the county and the city and we are not a part of any request for state funding," said Tim Schwarz, chief financial officer of Belvedere Terminals, in a statement.
The St. Petersburg-based company plans to build a fuel terminal consisting of three tanks with about 300,000 barrels of fuel storage on site, or about 12.6 million gallons. In a previous interview, Schwarz told the Observer Belvedere had spent between $3 million and $4 million on engineering and design work for the development of the property at 874 Hull Road.
Residents have been staunchly opposed to the proposed fuel farm due to its proximity to neighborhoods, the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport and local businesses and manufacturers.
