Palm Coast’s annual Cultural Arts Program grant will be divided among 13 nonprofits in Flagler County.

The city budgeted $20,000 for the annual grant, to be split among the 13 organizations, according to a presentation at the Oct. 10 council meeting.

The grant helps Flagler County-based nonprofit organizations fund cultural arts programs and events within city limits.

This year, there are two tiers for the grant. Tier 1 focuses on events that promote economic activity and overnight stays in Flagler County. The city will donate $2,500 to each nonprofit recipient with such events, according to council meeting documents. Tier 2 requires that the program present a cultural activity that is new to the community. Those nonprofits will receive $1,111.99.

For Tier 1, staff recommended granting funds to: African American Cultural Society, Flagler Auditorium, Palm Coast Music Festival and City Lites.

For Tier 2, staff recommended the following nine organizations: Choral Arts Society, City Repertory Theatre, Community Chorus of Palm Coast, the Education Foundation, Flagler County Cultural Council, Flagler Performing Arts Academy, Palm Coast Methodist Church, SeaWolf Privateers and The Garden Club.

Council woman Theresa Carli Pontieri asked if city staff considered a nonprofit’s financial need when selecting which will get portions of the grant. She said some nonprofits may not have as much need as others.

“This is so hard, right? You don’t want to exclude anybody,” Pontieri said. “But I really do feel that there are some organizations that perhaps could use the money a little bit more than others.”

Mayor David Alfin said the grant is divided among the qualified applications. In the future, the council can establish the cultural grant as a priority to get more funds to non-profits, he said.

The council will vote on the grant distribution at an Oct. 17 business meeting.
