Matthew's Gift, a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering hope and support to children with medical complexities and their families, has donated $40,000 to Halifax Health and the families served in its Betty Jane France Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Matthew’s Gift will be used to create a day room for parents with babies in the NICU, a press release announced.

Matthew's Gift was founded in memory of Matthew Gable. Born prematurely at just 29 weeks, “Matthew faced a multitude of medical challenges throughout his life, including pulmonary hypertension. Despite these obstacles, he exhibited unwavering determination and an indomitable spirit, reminding us all of the incredible potential within every child,” said Matt Gable, Matthew’s father.

On April 14, 2016, Matthew died due to complications from his ongoing medical issues.

Matthew's Gift aims to accomplish several goals, including providing financial assistance to families in need; supporting hospitals to enhance care provided to children and families with complex medical needs; and contributing to research and development of medications to aid children, particularly those battling pulmonary hypertension.

“Matthew's story reminds us that every child has untapped potential and deserves a chance to explore it," said Joe Petrock, executive director for Halifax Health Foundation. "The Halifax Health Foundation is pleased to work with the Gable family to make stays at Halifax Health more comfortable for families and our smallest patients."
