The city of Palm Coast celebrated Temple Beth Shalom's 50th anniversary in the city at an Oct. 17 City Council meeting.

Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin presented a proclamation to members of the Jewish community, designating Oct. 27, 2023 in honor of the anniversary. Temple Beth Shalom Rabbi Rose Eberle thanked him and said the community is grateful to the Palm Coast community.

"We have found and built a home here 50 years ago," Eberle said. “We hope that the next 50 years brings us closer together [in] experience, our friendship and our goals."

The Temple was established in 1973, after 18 Jewish families moved to Palm Coast and the construction of Temple Beth Shalom at 40 Wellington Drive was completed in 1980, the proclamation said.

For half a century, the Temple has sustained Jewish traditions in Palm Coast and helped subsidize food drives and food banks, raise funds for student needs and championed local pet adoptions and animal service organizations.

“Temple Beth Shalom has been a bastion of support and community partnership in Palm Coast,” the proclamation said, “…exhibiting the congregation’s responsive service for all walks of life in our city."

Alfin said he struggled to find an introduction for the proclamation in the face of "human conflict," referencing the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

"Certainly," he said, "I wish everyone safety and wellbeing — everyone that's in harm's way."
