Joseph Woodward is a career Marine and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He reported to recruit training at Parris Island in 1966, and after basic electronics school found himself assigned in Vietnam from September 1967 to October 1968, earning the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V. Upon return from Vietnam, he was further trained in communications-electronics and transferred to Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, to train Marine reservists. Exhibiting exemplary proficiency in his field, he served as a technical advisor for three years and was then transferred to 29 Palms, California, as an instructor at the communications-electronics school. Rising through the ranks, he was promoted to first sergeant for Company E, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, which was followed by a promotion to sergeant major, the pinnacle of enlisted ranks, and assigned to VMFA-212, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron. He retired honorably from active duty while at the Marine Air Control Group, Naval Air Station, Glenview, Illinois. Woodward relocated to Port Orange, Florida and attended college, graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in education. He then returned to his high school alma mater in New Jersey and taught there for 10 years. Woodward retired from teaching and set out on the road for the next 10 years as a full-time traveling camper and volunteer at national wildlife refuges across the United States. He now resides happily in Flagler Beach.
