A woman shot by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper had driven her car at the officer while trying to flee from a traffic stop, according to the FHP.

The shooting occurred at 16th Road and Ocean Crest Drive on Oct. 25. The FHP officer fired into the woman's white Acura as it drove toward him, according to a press release from the FHP.

The incident began when the trooper attempted to pull the woman over for reckless driving and endangering the public. Instead of pulling over, the woman fled before coming to a dead-end road.

The woman then drove her car at the trooper as he tried to take her into custody, and the trooper fired his gun at the woman in an "attempt to immobilize the deadly threat," according to the press release

The trooper then gave the woman first aid and called for Fire Rescue to treat her.

The woman has been hospitalized, and the press release did not include an update on her condition. Neither the trooper nor the woman's female passenger were injured.

The scene was  later turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the shooting, a standard practice for police-involved shootings, according to the press release. The FHP will also conduct a routine internal investigation of the incident.

This is a developing story.
