Flagler County's Emergency Management is hosting a free class that teaches basic disaster and emergency response skills, like disaster preparedness, and light search and rescue. and team organization.
The class is Flagler County's Community Emergency Response Team nationally-certified training program and begins on April 22 for its Spring 2024 course, a Flagler County press release said. The program also delves into topics like disaster medical skills, disaster psychology, fire safety and utility control.
“The program is an invaluable partnership between the community and professional first responders,” Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord said. “CERT allows our residents to train with subject matter experts. Previous experience is not necessary – just a desire to learn and help others.”
Registration is required for this 30-hour course, which will meet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Emergency Operations Center through May 22. Registration is available online and can be accessed by going to www.FlaglerCounty.gov/emergency and then selecting “Volunteering & Training” from the menu.
The course concludes with a disaster simulation and graduation, the press release said, and participants will receive a T-shirt and disaster kit as well. Those who are interested in learning more about CERT should consider taking the free online FEMA IS-317 course.
“When our residents are trained in these basic disaster skills," Lord said, "it allows neighbors to help each other while our first responders are focusing on the most critical needs in a disaster.”
