Expect lane closures on A1A in Ormond Beach this week, as a $4 million Florida Department of Transportation's $4 million pedestrian safety road project is slated to start Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Eight new mid-block crossings will be added, seven of which will feature rapid flashing beacons, from Milsap Road to Granada Boulevard on A1A. Other improvements include resurfacing existing pavement, curb and gutter, concrete sidewalk upgrades, traffic separator installation and lighting enhancements, according to FDOT.

The new rapid flashing beacons will be installed at the crosswalks at:

  • Milsap Road
  • Benjamin Drive
  • River Beach Drive
  • Arlington Way
  • Ormond Parkway
  • Osceola Avenue
  • Bosarvey Drive

The new crosswalk at Rockefeller Drive will have a pedestrian hybrid beacon, which FDOT states is an "overheard traffic device that remains dark until a pedestrian activates the beacon, signaling for drivers to stop and for pedestrians to cross."

Only the crosswalks near Milsap Road and Bosarvey Drive will be raised, aimed to put pedestrians in a more visible position and slow traffic, FDOT states.

According to a Facebook post shared by the city of Ormond Beach, the speed limit in the project area will be reduced to 30 mph instead of the road's previous speed limit of 35 mph.

There will be single lan closures along northbound and southbound A1A from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting Wednesday, Jan. 10, through Saturday, Jan. 13. Installation of the raised crosswalks is expected to be completed by the end of January. Crews will also begin resurfacing the roadway during this timeframe, and will return Tuesday, Jan. 16, to continue paving operations, FDOT reports.
