Volusia County Beach Safety boosts pay, offers bonuses for lifeguards

Volusia County Beach Safety is offering starting pay of $17 per hour, with an opportunity to earn up to $1,750 in bonuses for its part-time lifeguards.

In preparation for the upcoming summer season, Volusia County Beach Safety is actively seeking part-time lifeguards to ensure the safety of beachgoers. As part of its recruitment efforts, the organization has implemented an increased starting pay of $17 per hour, accompanied by the opportunity to earn up to $1,750 in bonuses. 

Prospective candidates must meet the following criteria: 

  • Be at least 16 years old on or before June 1
  • Demonstrate the ability to swim 500 meters freestyle in under 10 minutes
  • Swim 50 yards freestyle in under 30 seconds
  • Complete a half-mile run in under 3 minutes and 15 seconds. 

Successful applicants will undergo a thorough screening process, including a background check, physical examination and drug screening. 

To be considered for employment, individuals must attend one of the scheduled 2024 tryouts, and participate in Volusia County Beach Safety's mandatory lifeguard recruit class, encompassing 48 hours of ocean rescue training. Additionally, candidates are required to complete a 40-hour first responder class and CPR course or present proof of equivalence. A $750 recruit sign-on bonus awaits those who fulfill the recruit class requirements, with an additional $1,000 bonus available for those committing to a specified number of days during the beach season. Detailed information regarding the bonus structure will be provided during the recruit class.

Swim tryout dates and locations are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 2 and March 16 at the Ormond Beach YMCA, 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 9 and March 23 at the Port Orange YMCA, 4701 City Center Parkway, Port Orange.
