The man who stole a cash register from the Cypress Point Parkway Walmart in December has been arrested.

On Dec. 10, the FCSO posted a photo of an unidentified man wearing a red shirt who was seen stealing a cash register from the store, a FCSO press release said. On Jan. 12, the FCSO announced that man has been identified as John Michael Wakefield, 43, of Wellington, Florida, near Palm Beach in South Florida.

Wakefield is a convicted felon who was released from prison in 2021 after serving 10 years for armed robbery, the press release said. In connection to the cash register theft, Wakefield has been charged with unarmed burglary of an occupied structure and grand theft.

The drawer was estimated to hold $3,500, according to the original incident report.

FCSO investigators were able to identify Wakefield as a suspect through facial recognition. During the investigation, FCSO's Major Case Unit and Real Time Crime Center tracked Wakefield to North Carolina and later back south to the Orlando area, the press release said.

When an exact location was determined, a Florida Highway Patrol unit apprehended Wakefield on the Florida Turnpike's Lake Service Plaza in Ocoee without incident, the press release said.

The Orange County Corrections Facility is holding Wakefield on local charges and he will later be transferred to the Flagler County jail, where he will be held on a $60,000 bond.
