Palm Coast has preliminarily approved a 30,000 commercial plaza for the intersection of Highway U.S. 1 and Belle Terre Boulevard.

The proposed development is on an 11-acre lot on the northeast corner of the intersection and is owned by Atlas Investments PC, LLC. The Palm Coast City Council approved the application 5-0.

Though the lot is multiple acres, much of the land will remained undeveloped, with the applicant requesting four acres on the proper along the back east side of the lot retaining a preservation designation, leaving a 200- to 300-foot natural buffer between the property and the neighboring residential neighborhood, according to meeting documents.

The remaining six acres will be zoned for commercial use.

The plaza itself will be on the southwest corner of the lot and have two entrances, one on U.S. 1 and on one Belle Terre Boulevard.

Within the six acres planned for the plaza is a two-care borrow pit. A tentative design of the lot, shown at the October City Planning Board meeting, shows the applicant intends on the pit becoming a pond on the north side of the property.

RICHENBACKER DRIVE BECOMES RICKENBACKER DRIVE

Palm Coast has agreed to change the spelling of Richenbacker Drive.

Previously spelled with an "h," the street will now be spelled Rickenbacker Drive, with a "k" instead. The council unanimously approved the change, in keeping with the city's current practice.

For the last 20 years, the city — including its post office and residents on Rickenbacker Drive — has spelled the street with a "ck" instead of a "ch," according to  Land Management Administrator Virginia Smith. Officially changing the spelling to match the current practice will not impact anyone's address.
