Halifax Humane Society CEO Adam Leath is stepping down and a nationwide search for a new CEO will be conducted, the animal shelter announced on Friday, Jan. 19.

"The board of directors expresses its sincere gratitude to Mr. Leath for his valuable contributions, tireless efforts, and positive impact on Halifax Humane Society," a press release stated. "Under his guidance, the organization has reached new heights in its mission to provide compassionate care for animals in need. Halifax Humane Society acknowledges Mr. Leath's decision to step down and wishes him success in all his future endeavors."

HHS said in its press release that Leath's leadership during his time as CEO — about nine months — contributed to the success and growth of the organization.

Leath was hired to lead HHS in April 2023. Prior to that, he worked as the director of Volusia County Animal Services, from 2019 to 2023.

Miguel Abi-Hassan will serve as the animal shelter's interim CEO, effective Jan. 19. Abi-Hassan led the 2017 campaign that renovated the HHS facilities and was CEO for 11 years before resigning in 2021.

"The board is confident that under his leadership, Halifax Humane Society will continue to advance its mission and uphold its high standards of service," the press release states.

Abi-Hassan's appointment is part of a nationwide search for a permanent CEO, the press release adds.
