Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast girls wrestlers won seven of eight weight classes contested at the Pat White Memorial Lady Pirate Classic on Jan. 18 at the Pirates’ gym.
Six Matanzas wrestlers won championships in their weight classes, including the Pirates’ heavyweight, Ani Brown, who won a combined class of 170, 190 and 235 pounds. Matanzas’ Jazlyn Golder (105), Mariah Mills (115), Autumn Jarvis (120), Tiana Fries (140) and Kendall Bibla (155) also won titles. FPC’s Ana Vilar won the 135-pound title. Her sister, Alisha Vilar, finished second to Fries at 140. FPC’s Gabby Jones placed second to Bibla at 155. Matanzas’ R’Carden Michel placed second to Mills at 115.
Bartram Trail’s Katherine Stewart won the 145-pound title. Bibla defeated Stewart in the 145-pound state championship match last season.
Matanzas won the team title with 142 points. Just eight schools sent wrestlers to the tournament this year because it was scheduled on a Thursday afternoon due to a weekend event scheduled at the gym.
In other girls tournaments this past week, Matanzas placed fourth at the Girls Elite 8 Duals Championship at Orlando Freedom High School. Coach Mike Fries brought 10 wrestlers to the tournament. South Dade, with a full roster of 14 wrestlers, won the title. Tiana Fries, Bibla and Mills all went undefeated in the tourney.
Matanzas senior Jordan Mills remained undefeated in winning the 190-pound title in the War Eagle Classic at Kissimmee Poinciana. Mills, ranked first in the state in Class 2A, defeated No. 2 Sawyer VanRider of New Smyrna Beach 5-1 in the final. VanRider has committed to Campbell University, a Division I wrestling program.
Matanzas and New Smyrna are both in District 4-2A, so Mills and VanRider could meet three more times this postseason.
Mikey Fries (144), Mason Obama (150) and A.J. Sanchez (157) all placed third for the Pirates, while Trevin Johnston (113) and Carmine Lania (175) were fourth.
Flagler Palm Coast’s run in the Class 3A state duals championship came to an end on Jan. 12 with a 36-34 loss to Gainesville Buchholz in the Region 1 semifinals (the round of 16). Buchholz won six matches to FPC’s eight wins, but all six of the Bobcats’ wins were by pins, producing bonus points.
“The message is if you’re on your back, fight like heck to get off your back, and if you have your opponent on their back, fight like heck to get the pin,” FPC coach David Bossardet said.
The Bulldogs had Joslyn Johnson wrestling at 113-pound class and she pinned her opponent in the Buchholz match.
“She’s as tough as she can be, and she’s our best bet at 113,” Bossardet said.
Johnson will be back wrestling with the girls in the postseason.
The Bulldogs had three dual matches last week. They defeated Deltona 69-7 and Atlantic 71-6 but lost to Clay 43-26.
The big tournament this week will be the annual Flagler Rotary on Jan. 26-27 at FPC. Thirty teams, including Fleming Island, Harmony, Winter Springs and Brunswick, Georgia, will be in the field. Mainland is the only other local team in the field.
