Great Britain’s Caryl Churchill is widely regarded as one of the era’s finest playwrights. Her provocative musical play “Vinegar Tom” takes to the City Repertory Theatre boards on Fridays and Saturdays March 15, 16, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, March 17 and 24 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at crtpalmcoast.com or by calling 386-585-9415 and are $15.00 for students and $30.00 for adults.
Set against the backdrop of 17th century England’s witch hunts, “Vinegar Tom” takes its name from the alleged “familiar” belonging to one of the first women to be tried and executed for witchcraft during England’s Civil War and resulting turbulent civil unrest. The production features new, original music by composer/pianist Benjamin Beck, known for many contributions to productions by the CRT.
The resulting creation is a modern and sometimes humorous take on attempts to subjugate women over the centuries and particularly during the 1970s Feminist Movement in the United States when the play was written.
Actors for the CRT performance are Jen Chidekel, Eleanor Coyne, Robin Davis, Laniece Fagundes, Anna Hobbs, Liz Post, Phillipa Rose, Bethany Stillion, Andrew Trotter, Beau Wade, and Joanne van Zyl.
“The play investigates a male dominated society challenged by women," Director John Sbordone said. "It is a current and thoughtful commentary on the events of the past. We are proud to present this production during Women’s History Month.”
Now in its thirteenth season, the CRT has earned significant critical acclaim not only for its bold and diverse repertory, but also for its superb production values and acting. The CRT is located at the City Market Place, 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite B207, in Palm Coast.
