Flagler County placed under Hurricane Warning alert, residents urged

A 7 a.m. update on Oct. 8 from the National Hurricane Center places Flagler County has been under a Hurricane Warning. Hurricane Milton is moving east at 12 mph with sustained winds of 145 mph.

Flagler County officials are urging residents to finalize preparations for impacts expected Wednesday and Thursday from Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 5 storm.

While there will be time to safely complete preparations on Tuesday, residents are encouraged to complete preparations today, to include stocking up their emergency supplies, filling up their fuel tanks, and reviewing their plans should their neighborhood need to evacuate. 

Weather Expectations:

We expect to see high-end Tropical Storm, and even potentially Hurricane force impacts on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

  • Rain: 6-8” through Friday
  • Wind: Tropical Storm / Hurricane Force possible Wed - Thu
  • Storm Surge: 3-5 feet above normal tides possible Wed – Thu 

Evacuations & Sheltering:

  • Evacuation Orders are likely Wednesday morning for the areas identified at www.FlaglerCounty.gov/emergency
  • Once the Evacuation Orders are issued residents seeks public sheltering will be able to go to Rymfire Elementary School, which will be our primary pet-friendly shelter.
  • For residents, whose evacuation plans are to go to hotels/motels or stay with friends/family, we recommend you do so well before the evacuation orders are issued; preferably before Tuesday night – to help limit the traffic on the roads on Wednesday.

Government Closures:

A variety of government offices and programs will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, with the latest list available at www.FlaglerCounty.gov/emergency.

This list includes Flagler County Schools which is closing all schools and offices Wednesday through Friday. 

Sandbags Available:

Local governments continue to provide sandbags with the latest locations and times that can be found at www.FlaglerCounty.gov/emergency
