Our beloved mother and Nana, Shelva “Jackie” Jean McPhatter, aged 87, passed away peacefully of natural causes on September 28, 2024 at Elizabeth Seton Memory Care Center in Greensburg, PA.
Shelva was born in West Berlin, PA on December 7, 1936 to the late Louis J. Hepler and Estel E. Hough Hepler. She graduated from South Huntingdon High school in 1954 and went on to study stenography and earn a diploma from Douglas Business School. In 1960 she married Donald Bennett McPhatter Sr. in West Newton, PA. They first resided in Pittsburgh, PA and then moved to Bowie, MD before settling down in Springfield, VA where they raised a family and she began a long career with the Department of the Navy working at the Naval Sea Systems Command. In September 1996 after 20 years of service with the federal government, she and her husband retired to Palm Coast, FL. In retirement she continued to stay active by volunteering with many local organizations. She also enjoyed playing golf, attending her weekly Bridge Club, playing Mahjong, boat rides, taking walks on the beach, going to lunch and shopping with friends. She was always a woman of faith and attended Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Palm Coast, FL
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donald Bennett McPhatter Sr; her sister Betty I. Smeltz; her brothers Gerald H. Hepler and Calvin W. Hepler and niece Tracy Showman Courtney.
She is survived by her two sons, Donald B. McPhatter Jr and wife Angela of Manassas, VA and David R. McPhatter of Fairfax, VA; her grandchildren, Mark McPhatter, McKenna McPhatter and Dillon McPhatter of Cape Coral, FL and Jacob McPhatter of Fairfax, VA; a great grandson, Alex Rodriguez of Cape Coral, FL; her sister, Yvonne Showman and husband William of Greensburg, PA and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family And friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 12 o’clock at Barren Run United Methodist Church in Smithton, PA to honor and share their favorite memories. A graveside service at Barren Run Cemetery and reception at the church will follow immediately after.
