Florida Elite Soccer Academy is becoming Sporting Club Palm Coast Soccer Academy. It will be affiliated with Sporting Club Jacksonville, or Sporting JAX for short.

Sean Bubb, Florida Elite’s executive director, held an information session about the change on March 26 at the Matanzas High School Pirate Theater.

Sporting JAX’s future plans are to build a 15,000- to 20,000-seat stadium and operate a women’s pro soccer team in the USL Super League, a men’s pro team in the USL Championship league and a usL Youth Academy.

All players in the affiliated clubs will receive free season tickets to the Sporting JAX games and will have pathways to move up the ranks.

SWORD MIGHTY AT HAGERSTOWN

Former St. Joseph Academy basketball player Mason Sword of Palm Coast led Hagerstown (Maryland) Community College this season in scoring with 14.5 points per game. The 6-foot-4 forward was named the Region 20 tournament MVP. The sophomore hopes to play basketball at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) next year.

LIGHTS-OUT GAME WON'T BE CONTINUED

Matanzas High’s softball team defeated St. Augustine 12-1 on April 1 to improve to 11-1 on the season. Starting pitcher Ashely Sampselle had six strikeouts. Juliet Fogel hit a home run and walked twice.

The Matanzas-Flagler Palm Coast game has been listed as a Pirates win. The March 25 game at FPC was stopped with the Pirates leading 2-1 when the lights went out in bottom of the sixth inning. A wire reportedly was nicked during the stadium’s refurbishment earlier this season and burned out during the game. The problem has been fixed with the Bulldogs playing two more home games since then, including a 7-0 win over Menendez on March 31. Ashleigh Pigeon pitched a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts.
