The Matanzas softball team won the gold bracket championship at the 33rd Roger Jones Kissimmee Klassic on April 3-5 at the Fortune Road Athletic complex in Kissimmee.
The Pirates improved to 15-1 on the season with wins over Okeechobee (9-1), University (2-0), West Nassau (2-0) and St. Cloud (14-1).
Matanzas pitchers allowed just two runs in the four games. Leah Stevens, who has signed with the University of Florida, got the win in all four games. She struck out 40 batters in 19.1 innings while giving up just one run on three hits and a walk.
Stevens improved to 9-0 on the season with a 0.52 earned run average and 122 strikeouts in 54.1 innings.
At the plate, senior shortstop Juliet Fogel tore the cover off the ball. Fogel went 9 for 14 with three doubles, two triples, 5 runs scored and 5 runs batted in. Fogel, who has signed with St. Johns River State College, raised her batting average to .457 for the season.
Matanzas, which beat University for the first time earlier this season, is now 2-4 all-time against the Titans.
The Pirates entered the Kissimmee tournament ranked fifth in the state in Class 5A. They head down the season stretch with three of their final four regular-season games at home, including an April 16 showdown with Atlantic Coast, 16-2 and ranked 11th in Class 7A.
After traveling to district foe Beachside (11-4) on April 17, the Pirates will close out the regular season at home on April 22 with another game against West Nassau.
District tournaments begin the week of April 28.
