Ormond Ballet's upcoming show, "Prometheus," explores the themes of human ingenuity, the struggle for freedom, the price of defiance and the enduring power of hope.
"'Prometheus' delves into the story of the Titan who defied the gods to gift humanity with fire," according to a statement from Ormond Ballet. "The ballet explores not just the act of rebellion, but the complex consequences that follow. The choreography, a blend of classical technique and modern movement, beautifully captures the struggle, the hope, and the inevitable conflict that arises from such a profound act."
To be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, the original contemporary ballet was choreographed and directed by Ormond Ballet Director Jeremiah Garner, with music from the motion picture "The Fountain" by Clint Mansell.
“I created this ballet to inspire hope for more in our lives," Garner said in the statement to the Observer. "Humanity has gone through and will go through many highs and lows, but it’s how we deal with those changes that matter. How we face the positive and negative in our lives truly forms who we are as individuals and communities.”
The ballet features a cast of 13 dancers. They are:
Ormond Ballet states that the dancers will deliver a powerful performance, "conveying the raw emotion and intellectual depth of the narrative," as the use of lighting and set design enhance the story.
"The process changes my perspective on work ethnic," said Eris Potts, a senior with Ormond Ballet. "It takes a lot of focus and commitment. Throughout my experience from the beginning, it has been very rewarding to see how the choreography unfolds into one of the most meaningful shows we have done yet!"
While Ormond Ballet has done contemporary shows in the past, this ballet is different, said Mira Khanna, also a senior with Ormond Ballet.
"This is something we haven't experienced before," Khanna said. "The themes that are seen in Prometheus aren’t typically ones you would directly associate with ballet, but it is so easy to recognize the themes through the choreography and the emotions of the show. It is really powerful!”
