SIDELINES: Garrett Johns wins Palm Coast Open; Matanzas boys advance in soccer playoffs

JOHNS WINS PALM COAST OPEN

Second-seeded Garrett Johns won the singles title at the Men’s Palm Coast Open on Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Southern Recreation Center.

The tournament is a $15,000 USTA Pro Circuit event. Johns, an Atlanta, Georgia, native, defeated No. 5 seed Sebeastian Gima Romania in a marahton three-set match, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2. The match lasted three hours, 14 minutes.

Louis Van Herck of Luxembourg and Maron Vankan of German won the doubles title with a 1-6, 6-4, 10-4 victory over Luca Horve and Oliver Okonkwo on Feb. 1.

Vankan played an impressive match after losing in three sets to Johns in the semifinals earlier in the day.

REGIONAL SOCCER PLAYOFFS

Seabreeze’s girls soccer team lost 1-0 to New Smyrna Beach in the Region 2-5A quarterfinals on Feb. 4. The Sandcrabs were coming off a 1-0 win over New Smyrna in the District 6-5A title game.

The Matanzas boys traveled to Niceville on Feb. 4 and defeated the Eagles 3-2 in the Region 1-6A quarterfinals. The Pirates will travel to Mandarin in Jacksonville on Friday, Feb. 7 for a regional semifinal.

PIRATES WIN DISTRICT TOURNEY OPENER

The Matanzas boys basketball team won its district quarterfinal game, 60-47, over Bartram Trail on Feb. 3. The Pirates were scheduled to face top seed Tocoi Creek in the semifinals on Feb. 5.  

BOBCAT 5K SET FOR FEB. 15

The Belle Terre Elementary School Bobcat 5K and Kids Fun Run is scheduled for 9 a.m. Feb. 15 at BTES. The event includes a health fair after the run. Awards include best costume for children under 12, adults and couple/family, finisher medallions and top three male and female overall and age group winners.
