A 14-year-old Indian Trails Middle School was arrested by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office after deputies report he brought a gun to a Matanzas High School basketball game.

The FCSO reports that the Matanzas school resource deputy was alerted on Jan. 31 to a photo circulating on social media of a student holding a handgun in a school bathroom. Deputies, along with the SRD, reviewed surveillance footage from the school's basketball game held the previous night, and saw the student enter the bathroom several times during the game, according to a press release. At one point, he was seen entering the bathroom with three other ITMS students who then ran out of the bathroom minutes later, which deputies later discovered was due to seeing the student lift his shirt and reveal the gun.

Deputies then spoke with the student and asked for his phone, which the teen denied handing over, attempting to leave the room, the press release states. The FCSO reported the teen "became resistive," and was placed in handcuffs after a brief altercation.

He was arrested for resisting an officer with violence and transported to the jail, where the Department of Juvenile Justice directed he be released to a parent.

On Feb. 14, a search warrant of the teen's phone was served. Detectives located several photos of the student with the gun. The press release states that the teen told other students that he had disposed of the gun and claimed he no longer had it.

He was arrested once again on Feb. 19 fro exhibition of a weapon on school property. He was taken to the Volusia County Juvenile Detention Center.

“Flagler Schools appreciates the proactive approach to safety the men and women of the FCSO provide to our students, faculty and staff during school hours, as well as public events held on our campuses throughout the week,” Flagler Schools Superintendent LaShakia Moore said in the press release. "Please note that our commitment to safety extends beyond school hours. We will collaborate with the FCSO to identify and prosecute any individuals who commit crimes on our campus during school hours, as well as at public events held on our campuses.”

The FCSO reports the gun has not been recovered. Submit tips by calling 386-313-4911, emailing [email protected], using the FCSO app or website, or through the FortifyFL app at getfortifyfl.com.
