With $1 and 50 cents, Mary McLeod Bethune opened the Daytona Normal and Industrial School for Negro Girls in 1904. During the first two years, enrollment grew to 250 female students. Lempel will explore the reasons for the school’s explosive growth despite intense racial prejudice that typified the era.

This free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ormond Beach Library and is open to the public.
