Florida Republican Sen. Randy Fine and Orlando Democrat Josh Weil prevailed over their opponents in the special primary election for Congressional District 6 on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Fine, a resident of Melbourne Beach, who was just elected to the Florida Senate in November, earned 83.02% of the vote. He was running against Ehsan Joarder, an information technology specialist residing in Brooksville, and citizen Aaron Baker, of Sorrento. Joarder and Baker earned 2.94% and 14.04% of the vote, respectively.
"G-d saved Donald Trump’s life so he could save the world," Fine wrote on his Facebook page. "And tonight, both of them, powered by my amazing family and all of you who voted for me, put me one step closer to being able to help him do that. I swear I won’t let any of you down."
In Volusia and Flagler County, Fine also won the primary election by wide margin: he earned 81.12% of the vote in Volusia County, and 84.1% of the vote in Flagler.
Weil, a single father and public school educator, won the primary against George "Ges" Selmont, of Elkton, a businessman who ran for Congressional District 4 in 2018. Weil won the primary with 60.76% of the vote. Selmont earned 39.24%.
Similarly, Weil won the primary in Volusia and Flagler County, with 58.15% and 68.17% of the vote respectively.
"Tonight, our campaign’s victory belongs to the thousands of Floridians who believe in the power of regular people over partisan political games – and we’re just getting started," Weil said on his Facebook page. "I’m a public educator and single dad, so I’ve seen firsthand the struggles families across our communities face every day. Floridians need leaders who will fight to actually lower the cost of housing and groceries, invest in our schools, and expand access to good healthcare."
Fine and Weil won't be the only names on the ballot for the special general election on April 1. Two other candidates are also in the running: Libertarian Andrew Parrott, of Ocala, and longtime anti-abortion activist and 2024 Constitution Party presidential nominee Randall Terry. Chuck Sheridan, of Merritt Island, is running as a write-in candidate.
What percentage of Volusia and Flagler County voters participated in the special primary election? The Volusia County Supervisor of Elections reported a preliminary voter turnout of 10.76%. Flagler County's turnout was 17.47%.
