Bethune-Cookman University received $100,000 from the United States Tennis Association Florida on Feb. 28, and the funds will be used to build the university's first on-campus tennis courts.
“This generous investment from USTA Florida marks a historic moment for our Wildcat Nation,” said Sherry Paramore, B-CU vice president of Institutional Advancement, in a press release. “It represents a commitment to fostering a championship culture that provides our student athletes with the resources to compete at the highest level both on and off the tennis court.”
Play Tennis Gainesville Director of Tennis and USTA Florida AMPLIFY Project member George Henry said in the press release that the organization was honored to help B-CU, and that the cause was personal to him.
"I originally relocated to Florida to be the head coach and tennis director at B-CU before COVID," he said. "Little did I know that the university would have such an impact on me as a person. I truly took to heart the motto of ‘Enter to Learn. Depart to Serve.’ I am very honored to be a part of the USTA Florida Section in providing support for B-CU and all the Florida HBCUs.”
In October 2023, B-CU administrators celebrated the completion of a new on-campus practice football field. Most recently, the university launched a fundraising campaign with alumni basketball players to pay from improvements to the gymnasium.
