Every month, Gable Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area holds a ranger-led program. For the month of January, Ranger Richard Northey taught the basics of crabbing. Participants learned rules and regulations, crabbing techniques, ways to store crabs and how to prepare them as a meal.
After learning the basics, participants were let loose to become crabbing experts.
'It's fun and easy,' Northey said. 'It doesn't take a lot of sophisticated equipment.'
Fishing for blue crabs can be done at any body of water connected to the ocean, Northey told attendees.
The next ranger-led program is 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11. This Coffee with a Ranger session will focus on animal tracking.
